Virtual STEM Activities in AIESEC Speak Up Project

Introduction

KLESF collaborated with AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis (Malaysia) as the Learning Partner for the STEM workshop and STEM project in the Speak Up, a community project that address Sustainable Development Goals 4 Quality Education in youths across Malaysia.

AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis (Malaysia)

Background of AIESEC

AIESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. They are a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education who are interested in world issues, leadership and management.

AIESEC (pronounced eye-sek) was originally an acronym for Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales. AIESEC is no longer used as an acronym but simply as the name of the organisation.

AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis (Malaysia)

AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis (Malaysia) is a youth organisation in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), formed in 2016, aimed to sharpen leadership skill through meeting with diverse people and having practical experiences.

Speak Up Project

Speak Up is a project that address Sustainable Development Goals 4 Quality Education in youths across Malaysia. It is aimed to create impact on a local level towards SDG Target 4.4 – by 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship by providing an online learning platform for young people on personal development and STEM education opportunity towards underprivileged high school students (B40 groups and rural area students).

Key activities:

  • Speak Up Video Challenge – A platform for students to challenge themselves and also improve their English proficiency.
  • STEM Workshop – A platform for students to understand the significant and role of technologies in every aspects of life. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in STEM Education.
  • STEM Project – An assignment for students to apply what they have learnt in STEM Workshop and also being creative in creating their project.
  • Speak Up Podcast – Youths will have the chance to exchange knowledge and discuss on quality education.
  • Personal Development Workshop – A platform for students to improve their English proficiency and writing skills.

Target group:

  • Volunteers: 12 persons; they are the undergraduate students.
  • School students: 60 persons from 3 schools; they are the underprivileged high school students in Kedah.

KLESF as the Learning Partner for the STEM workshop and STEM Project and the involvement/roles are as follows:

 STEM Workshop – Provide training, consultation and workshop to volunteers on STEM topics. Volunteers will conduct the workshops to students.

  • STEM Project – Evaluate the outcome of the STEM project by students.

STEM Workshop 1: Video Editing (2 hours)

The participants will learn the following video editing skills using PC application, OpenShot Video Editor:

  • Splitting, deleting and combining video clips
  • Inserting audio and subtitles, visual effects and animations
  • Exporting videos

 

STEM Workshop 2: Introduction to Python Programming (Coding) (2 hours)

Participants will learn the basic concepts of Python programming and develop a simple game:

  • Introduction
  • Prompt and get functions
  • Variables
  • Calculations
  • Random Numbers
  • If statements
  • Functions
  • Iteration (looping)

STEM Project: Developing a video in a week’s time.
