Introduction

Studies have found that learning of a subject is always more effective if the process involves all the human senses. Hands-on experience is thus very important in the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) subjects. The hands-on activities make the STEM subjects more lively and interesting as students can see and experience the outcome of their work and this will help to address the issue of declining interest in STEM among students.

The Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) Steering Committee, having started a pilot run of the School Engineering and Science Design Mentorship (SESDM) programme in January 2014 in selected schools intends to extend further the concept of enhancing the interest and learning of STEM among students through mentored hands-on project work carried out by them.

The KLESF Mentor Development (KMD) Programme aims to support and help teachers, educators, parents, professionals, university students, etc. that have been or are interested in mentoring and guiding school students in hands-on project work.

Objectives

The KLESF Mentor Development (KMD) Programme has the following objectives:

  1. To provide guidance and training to teachers, educators, parents, professionals, university students, etc. that have been or are interested in mentoring and guiding school students in hands-on project work.
  2. To provide support to mentors in terms of content and resources needed for school mentorship programmes.
  3. To link the school mentors and provide platform (forums, social network, etc.) for better exchange and sharing of info and experience.

KMD Programme

A programme to introduce interested teachers, educators, parents, professionals, university students, etc. to school mentorship and get them acquainted and be able to start hands-on project work in schools.
